Some preparation suggestions to help ensure that your goods arrive safely
-
Don't dispatch sensitive goods, such as lap top computers, in satchels. Manufacturer's packing is best but if that is not available, use a carton with plenty of shredded paper or foam beads.
-
Ensure cartons are big enough to allow for ample packing material to surround the goods.
-
Pack goods adequately to survive a drop from knee height.
-
Address every carton and number each one to show that it is part of the consignment, eg. 1 of 3; 2 of 3 and; 3 of 3.
-
Ensure that any previous address or destination labels are removed from the packaging before dispatch.
-
Use the "Special Care labels" which are available from AaE.
-
Framed pictures worth more than $500 need special packing, including a timber surround and a 2 ply in-fill. Apply masking tape to the glazing on pictures to prevent further damage should the glass break.
-
Glassware china and ornaments are likely to need specialised packaging.
-
Electrical circuit boards and joints in used electrical equipment such as computers and TVs become brittle with age, making them unsuitable for transport through any freight system.
-
House all domestic animals and pets in suitable containers. Pet-packs for dogs are available from AaE and other specialists. Domestic bird cages are unsuitable because they do not provide adequate protection from damage by other cargo.
-
Transit Cover is limited to the risk of Loss Only on Kayaks, Windsurfers, Surf Skis, Surf boards, Longboards (Malibu's) which are three or more metres in length, and other fibreglass items can present handling difficulties because they are unlikely to fit into aircraft containers and must therefore be stored loose.
-
Loose items such as pumps and trip computers should be removed from bicycles. Bike-packs should be used whenever possible.
-
Where long items, such as fishing rods, are not fully enclosed on a box, they should be strapped to an equal length of timber to prevent bending.
-
All perishable goods and sea foods must be despatched using a perishable service consignment note. Since first loss cover cover against spoilage through delay excludes the first eight hours, goods should be packed in a manner which will ensure their survival for at least eight hours longer than the expected transit time. Perishable goods are only accepted for shipment on an airport-to-airport basis. |
